Double Diamond is a process model created by Design Council, a British organization, in 2005. The model provides a graphic representation of a design process. Its development was based on case studies gathered from the design departments at 11 global firms. Four generic stages are identified and described in this process model. The model presents four main stages across two adjacent diamonds.

While there are many design process frameworks, such as the Stanford D.School design thinking, Double Diamond, and IBM Design Thinking process, the questions are: why do we need another design process; and what are the advantages of the Google Design Sprint over the other design processes? Below are a number of the advantages of the Design Sprint.

A digital platform for your team to learn and apply design thinking. LUMA Workplace has tools, resources, classes and videos to help everyone build skills, effectiveness and confidence using design thinking. It’s all built on the LUMA System of Innovation, a practical, flexible and scalable framework of human-centered design. Photo. Before photo: 2 colleagues argue about project priorities.

More than a methodology or framework, design thinking combines the problem-solving roots of design with deep empathy for the user. The design thinking-based framework popularized by the Stanford d.school can help your team take on the thorniest challenges with insightful solutions. In this guide, you’ll learn how to put design thinking into practice in your organization.

Design Thinking is a design methodology that provides a solution-based approach to solving problems. It’s extremely useful in tackling complex problems that are ill-defined or unknown, by understanding the human needs involved, by re-framing the problem in human-centric ways, by creating many ideas in brainstorming sessions, and by adopting a hands-on approach in prototyping and testing.

Learn about the tools and methods used to make positive change. Phases Discover, Define, Develop and Deliver refer to the Design Council Double Diamond framework, which you can find out more about here. Some of the tools can be used repeatedly, at different stages of the design process.

Design thinking follows a double-diamond approach that allows for both divergent and convergent thinking styles. Divergent thinking is typically associated with imagination, originality, curiosity.

Design thinking is an approach inspired by the design practices (Lawson (2005), Cross (2007)), which entails a non-linear process consisting of a holistic analysis of the problem as well as an exploration of many different possible solutions before implementation of a final solution. A process which requires an ability to deliberately shift between divergent thinking and convergent thinking.
